Transforming communities through research-driven initiatives across urban planning, climate resilience, and food security
Our current portfolio of projects addresses critical challenges in urban development, climate adaptation, and sustainable food systems across Sub-Saharan Africa.

This project aims to enhance Home-Grown School Meals Programmes (HGSM) in Zambia and Malawi by addressing systemic challenges in procurement, gender inclusion, climate resilience, and rural-urban food system linkages. It seeks to create equitable, climate-resilient, and sustainable school feeding ecosystems that benefit both learners and local farmers. The project has 6 cities regions where it is being implemented. These cities are Ndola, Livingstone, Solwezi and Lusaka for Zambia and Blantyre and Lilongwe for Malawi.

The MECHANICS project is a collaboration led by the UK Met Office and the University of Zambia (UNZA) that is bringing cutting-edge climate science to Lusaka to solve the critical problem of urban flooding. It aims to improve a high-resolution pan-Africa climate model by testing it in local, flood-prone areas like Kanyama and Kalikiliki. By combining this advanced modeling with direct community engagement the project is creating reliable, evidence-based solutions that the Lusaka City Council and local partners can use to build resilient neighborhoods and implement new development plans.
