Assessing Bicycle Mobility Patterns in Rural Africa

2023-2024
Rural Zambia
200+ Households

Project Overview

This comprehensive study examines bicycle transportation patterns, infrastructure needs, and mobility solutions in rural African communities. The research aims to understand how bicycles contribute to rural mobility and identify opportunities to enhance transportation access for rural populations.

Research Objectives

Map Mobility Patterns

Document and analyze how rural communities use bicycles for transportation, including trip purposes, distances, and frequency of use across different demographic groups.

Assess Infrastructure Needs

Evaluate existing bicycle infrastructure and identify gaps in roads, paths, parking facilities, and maintenance services that limit bicycle mobility in rural areas.

Develop Policy Recommendations

Generate evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and development partners to improve bicycle mobility and transportation access in rural communities.

Research Methodology

Household surveys across 200+ rural households to understand bicycle ownership and usage patterns

GPS tracking and mobility diaries to map actual travel patterns and distances

Focus group discussions with community members to understand barriers and opportunities

Infrastructure assessments of roads, paths, and bicycle-related facilities

Stakeholder consultations with local government, transport providers, and development partners

Key Research Questions

How do rural households use bicycles for different purposes (work, education, healthcare, market access)?

What are the main barriers to bicycle ownership and use in rural communities?

How does bicycle mobility differ across gender, age, and socioeconomic groups?

What infrastructure investments would most effectively improve rural bicycle mobility?

Research Impact

This research will provide crucial evidence to inform transportation planning and investment decisions in rural Africa. By understanding bicycle mobility patterns and needs, we can help develop more inclusive and sustainable transportation systems that improve access to opportunities for rural populations.
